Mac OS X just keeps getting better!

7th July 2006, The newest cat in the pack, 10.4 Tiger, has new bells and whistles and terrific updates that make it even easier and more fun to use.
Now see the Hardware Monitor.

Hardware Monitor is electronically distributed software. Hardware Monitor is an application to read out all accessible hardware sensors in Macintosh computers. Currently more than 100 different Macintosh hardware sensors and more than 200 hard drive temperature sensors are supported. The program can visualize the history graphs of the readings, display measured values in a large variety of fashions, or announce readings by speech output.
Depending on what sensors are built into your Macintosh system, the following data can be accessed:

• Temperature readings at different locations

• Battery data of portable computers

• Voltage sensors

• Current (amperage) sensors

• Fan speed sensors

• Sensors for pulse-width controlled fans

• Power and load sensors

• Ambient light sensors

• User-defined artificial sensors to monitor the operating system

The Next thing is Video Cards. Video Cards are devices that display graphics and text on a monitor. They require special software called drivers to communicate with the operating system kernel. Different video cards differ in the amount of colors they can display (color depth), the amount of dots (pixels) per line, and the amount of lines per screen. Along with your video cards limitation to certain resolutions and refresh rates, your monitor must be compatible to display at the same setting.

Video cards use onboard RAM to store the image before drawing it to the screen .The more RAM available, the larger the image (resolution) and the more colors available.

PC video cards are available for the ISA, PCI, and AGP interface. Macintosh video cards are generally available for the PCI and AGP interface. Certain video cards are called accelerators in that their drivers are optimized to take special requests from the operating system and process them in much less time than a normal request would take.
