Contrary to most beliefs, a USB data cable actually uses a "virtual" serial port connection by tricking your computer into thinking the USB port the data cable is plugged in is actually a COM port. This step by step guide shows you how to determine what your "virtual com port" number is.
1. Download the drivers using the link below and run the driver installation program once the download is complete.
Ensure that your data cable is NOT plugged in before you install the USB data cable drivers.
2. Once the drivers are installed, connect the USB end of the data cable into an available USB port on your computer.".
3. The drivers will then install and map the USB cable to a virtual com port, eg, COM 5.
NOTE: To see what virtual com port number was assigned to your USB data cable, go into "Device Manager" in your Operating System's Control Panel and click on the "+" to expand the tree under "Ports (COM & LPT)"
Now simply open up your favourite communications software such as Nokia PC Suite, Oxygen Phone Manager 2, etc and dont forget to configure the software to communicate with the correct com port (in this example, COM 5).
