By taking precautions you can reduce the chances of having any unfortunate accidents, even a small collision into another vehicle could affect your car insurance costs in the following year, so to avoid heartache this Christmas follow some of our hints and tips.

· First and foremost, is the journey really necessary? If the weather is particularly bad it is often wise to wait until the situation improves before venturing out in your car.

· If you are going on a long journey check your oil, ensure anti-freeze is added to your radiator, suitable winter additive is mixed in with your screen wash and check your tyre pressure – extreme cold can reduce your tyre pressure.

· Keep lights, windows and mirrors free from ice and snow and carry a can of de-icer to clear your windows.

· Keep a spare blanket, flask, some food and a torch in the boot of your car should you get stuck in bad weather.

· IMPORTANT TIP – Never leave your car running and unattended in the morning. If your car is stolen while your keys are in the ignition you will NOT be covered on your car insurance.

· Be aware of stopping distances in icy conditions, up to ten times longer than under normal driving conditions. Drive in as high a gear as possible to avoid wheel spinning, manoeuvre gently, avoid harsh braking and if you do skid do not apply the breaks sharply, but ease off the accelerator.

· Should you have an accident contact your insurance company as soon as possible to register your claim.
