28 Steps to a Top Search Engine Ranking
1) Some consider it optional, however, it's not a bad idea to create your meta keywords tag content by copying the important search terms from the meta description tag and separating each term with a comma. In this instance, "wholesale widget, skinny red widgets, industrial red widgets, large widgets, large aluminum widgets, custom widgets, wholesale widget distributor".

2) Use your important key phrases in text links to your pages. Avoid statements like "Click here". Instead, link meaningful text to the page, like Don't forget The Best SEO TIP! Find the keywords that convert to sales. Having high rankings on search engines is pointless if these rankings don't convert to sales. It's better to have high rankings for 10 keywords that convert to sales than high rankings for 100 keywords that only bring you visitors. For that reason, it is important to find the keywords that work best for your business. By focusing on these keywords, you can greatly increase your revenue.

3) Use Heading tags Heading tags (H1 through to H6) are given more weight by search engines than regular body copy. So use them to reinforce the page's overall keyword theme. Don't make the date an H1 tag, instead make the current category name or tag name on your category page/tag page an H1 tag. Make the titles of your blog posts H2 tags.

4) Each page in your site should target just a few keywords to maximize the chance your site will appear in a search result.
Ensure your pages have some text. Graphics, Flash, and Java look great, but the search engines can't read them. If you want to put these features in place then ensure the text is repeated elsewhere for those people with scripts turned off, and the search engines can use that text.

5) Meta Tags - Originally designed to help search engines catalog pages, they're largely ignored now. However since some engines still use them, they're worth taking time to set up. Spend some time researching the search terms you would like to show up for your site and ensure your meta tags reinforce this.

6) Don't use keyword stuffed comment tags, these are beginning to be seen as spam. Make sure the text of your document supports your keywords. But be careful you don't spam the search engines or they will drop your site. Here Is an excellent way to drive tons of free traffic to your site. Go to: http://www.webmarketingpro.biz/free-traffic

7) Add more pages, the more pages the better. Each page can target a different search term, but more importantly each page will be different and therefore search engines will index them differently. More pages the more chance of one of your pages being relevant to a search phrase.

8) Making sure you use the free search engines. You can still submit to some of the best engines, such as Google, for free.
Pay-per-click can be useful to test new search terms to see your conversion rate. Pay-per-click can be expensive, so you need to use your money wisely and only go this route if you feel it would prove cash positive. You can determine this quickly by subtracting the total cost of clicks from the total profit from sales.

9) Don't repeat words more than three times in the title, Meta keywords or Meta description. Make sure the content in 'P' tags makes sense to the content in the 'H' tags they follow.

10) Choose good titles for your pages, which include some of the keywords you're keen on being listed under. Make the title sound like English and not Just lines of keywords and keywords in it. Choose a different title for each page if possible.

11) Expand acronyms/abbreviations with ACRONYM and ABBR tags. By doing so, you also add the expanded term to your document, which the search engines can then pick up and index accordingly.

12) Name the folders or sub domains with keywords if applicable. Do not try playing with URL's to make it keyword rich. Include a section for "links". Use the page or pages for exchanging links with websites in the same business. Put links on this page and subsequent pages to their home page and ask them to add your home page link to their links page(s).

13) When search engine spiders become confused or slowed down because of design issues, your page becomes less relevant.
Search engine spiders can't see what you and I see so they must rely on the specific algorithms set for them. Some of these algorithms are going to depend on design issues in your web site.

14) Title should not begin with the domain name. It is often considered as spam. You should place the most prominent keyword first in the title tag. Each page title should describe the page content. Stop word such as "a","the", "and", "to" should be avoided.

15) Use a different Meta description tag for each page, as each page is different and stands a better chance of being found in the search results. Take your time to write a good description, consider adding your keyword phrase toward the middle of your description tag instead of the beginning.

16) You should not repeat the same keyword more than 3-7 times; you can get penalized for spam. Do put keywords at the beginning and middle of your paragraph.

17) You should write between 100-1000 words in page text. Same keywords should repeated 3-7 times. Google considers link farms and link exchange programs spam. These links are poor quality and temporary.

18) Exchange links with a website that is relevant to your content. Don't exchange links with a website that has no PageRank.
Keep all of your important pages in the root directory. This top level is considered very relevant by the spiders.

19) Build a site map to help the spider to get around your site. Write a keyword description for each text link that is relevant to the page you are linking to. You can build a nice free sitemap by going to: http://www.webmarketingpro.biz/sitemap.htm It only takes a few minutes.

20) Repeat relevant link to your most important pages at the bottom of your pages. Do not add website URL's that is not relevant to your website. Don't trick the search engine spiders to index a page that's different than the one users see. You can get your website banned by search engines. If the page is not accessible from the main site and not from the same domain, don't use it.

21) Do not hide text link that is the same color as the background of the page. Never use popular keywords that are not relevant to your website's content. You will be penalized for SPAM if you do.

22) Don't over submit your page unless you want your submission to be ignored. Check out your competition for ideas. Do a search using keywords that you already know you want to target and click through on the top sites that come up. Once on the site view the source HTML code and view the keywords they have in their meta tags - this should give you many more ideas! Make sure to only use keywords that relate to YOUR site or page. To view the HTML code simply click the 'View' at the top of your web browser then select 'Source', or 'Page Source'.

23) I recommend that you include 1-2 of your most important keyword phrases in the title tag, BUT be careful not to just list keywords. If you just list keywords you risk being viewed as a spamming the engines which can ultimately lead to you being blacklisted by the search engines. Your title tag should include your keyword phrases while remaining as close to a readable sentence as possible to avoid any problems.

24) Make your title enticing! Don't forget that even if you get that #1 listing in the search engines your listing still needs to say something that makes the surfer want to click through and visit your site. Each page of your site should have it's own title tag with it's own keywords that related to the page that it appears on.

25) Add additional copy filled pages to your site. For example, how-to articles, tips or tutorials. These types of content pages not only help you in the search engines, but many other sites will link to them too. Don't ignore this tip! Seriously, optimizing your page copy is one of the most important things you could possibly do to improve your listings in the search engines. So, make sure you have plenty of it even if you need to redesign your site to work it in!

26) Try to have your most important keywords appear at the beginning of your description. This often brings better results, and will help avoid having any search engine cut off your keywords if they limit the length of your description. Don't forget plurals. For example, a travel site might have both "caribbean vacation" and "caribbean vacations" in their keyword meta tag to make sure they show up in both searches.

27) If you know of a common misspelling of a popular keyword that could be used to find your site you should enter it in your keywords meta tag. For example, a travel site might use "caribean " in their keyword meta since it is a common misspelling for "caribbean".

28) If your site has content of interest to a specific geographic location be sure to include the actual location in your keyword meta.
Try to include your most important keyword phrases within the hyperlink itself and try to include your most important keyword phrases in the text that immediately precedes, or follows the hyperlink.
