We all know they are the gardener's nemesis … but it doesn't have to be.

There's a new way to do it.

"If you hide the tomato inside a horizontal paper cup, and stabilize the cup with a BirdBusta™ clip hooked to a nearby stem, you'll fool most of the birds, most of the time" according to Peter McDonald, inventor of the Clip.

In earlier seasons, he regularly lost over half his tomatoes to birds, but since using the Cup – Clip system, he has managed to keep about 85 - 90 per cent of them.

He explained that "each clip can be used and re-used many times a season. As fruit ripens and is picked, the cup and clip can be detached and shifted to other fruit that is at risk – starting early in the season with plums, and then tomatoes, passion fruit, apricots and later, figs. Saving fruit like this rapidly pays for the cost of the Clip.

The birds seldom see the tomato if it is hidden inside a horizontal cup. If there are no birds in your garden, because they can't find tomatoes or fruit there, then this will tend to stop others flocking – birds go where other birds go".

He added that "many domestic gardeners report bird attacks on over half of their fruit, and find other protection methods, such as nets and alarms fairly awkward to use, and not always effective" .

He had used nets on his own fig tree, but the birds still found many of the figs before he did – and the nets usually made it difficult to gain access, and to pick them.
